What paper should I choose for my book? Print E-mail
There are several arguments that depends the choice of paper. If you make an appointment, we spend some time to talk about the different options.
Things you should consider are:
  • Of course personal taste. One person likes or don't like white or tinted, rough or smooth paper.
  • Is the book sewn or adhesive performed? In a thread-free finish it is very important that the glue attached to the paper very well. For this reason, mc coated paper is less suitable and woodfree offset is well suitable for an adhesive book.
  • Are there pictures in the book?
Photographs and other illustrations with gray tones are represented the best on the cutting smooth (coated) papers. On smooth paper the ink is spreading the least, while there is a blending of ink with rough papersorts and this will lead to a blurred image effect.
Examples of smooth paper, all mc (machine coated) papers. These are papersorts with a very smooth finish and therefore particularly suitable for books with lots of fine illustrations.
Papers with a rough surface, almost all HVO (woodfree offset) and novel species. Particularly suitable for textbooks but less suited for finely detailed illustrations.
  • The thickness or grammage of the paper is less relevant in choosing the most suitable paper for illustration. It is true that on a thicker paper illustration will shine through less (opacity is better of thicker paper) and therefore more beautiful displays. In such books is therefore often 135 grams machine coated paper used.
At HVO, it is also possible to use a thicking paper. This paper have in the same gram weight more volume than a non thicking paper.
90 gram woodfree thicking novel is an example of such a paper. The thicking of the novel paper is 1,95-2.0, or about 2x as thick as a non thicking paper.
