Can I create my cover design in Photoshop? Print E-mail

While Photoshop is not a layout program, it can be used as such. Preferably Photoshop version 7.0 or higher.

This versions stores the textual data, such as title and author's name, as editable text. This makes it possible to make textual changes afterwards. Something is not possible in previous versions.

Furthermore, it is very important that you use the correct color scheme. So no RGB colors, but CMYK or Duotone / Monotone only!

  • Send us the cover as a PDF file, AND as a photoshop *. psd file
  • Use a resolution of 250-300 dpi.  A cover for a book of 16.5 x 24 cm, with a spine 8 mm and 3-5 mm bleed, will produce a file that can be calculated as follows:

    • Width of the image/cover: 3 + 165 + 8 + 165 + 3 mm = 344 mm => 13.54 inch => 3385 pixels
    • Height of the image/cover: 3 + 240 + 3 = 246 mm => 9.68 inches => 2420 pixels
    • So the Photoshop-file, front and back together, is 3385 x 2420 pixels. Note: these are large files, your PC should have adequate memory and computing power to cope with this.
Generally, it is not possible to send us a 100% print-ready file from Photoshop. For example, no printermarks can be added. Making a psd file print-ready will almost always cost some extra time for our studio, so be aware of potential additional costs. The above information can help to keep additional costs as low as possible.
