Itself a cover supply Print E-mail
Do you want to design your own cover, you may have two ways:
  • Supplying a sample design / drawing in PowerPoint or MsWord
  • Delivering a printable pdf

1) Supplying a design example

If you have a design made for your book, but are unable to have it completely ready for printing, you can still save money by your design sketch to be provided in PowerPoint.
Your PowerPoint design can then be redesigned by our studio staff in a professional design program which is more favorable than converted completely from scratch.  Read more about how to deliver this sketch.

Creating a press-ready cover isn't possible in the programs PowerPoint or MSWord, because these programs do not support color seperation.

By submission of a design sketch, we assume you supply (useful) images and fonts. Of course we can arrange this for you, but this will obviously entail additional costs.
Please also note that illustrations from the Internet usually have a poor pixel quality, inadequate for pressure purposes. Scanned and / or printed illustrations, photographs and original sense almost always guarantee a better result. Observe at least 250 dpi at the correct size. Changing the dpi and Image size in photoshop of course has no meaning, the image will not get a higher resolution.
Please also ensure your image rights of images, particularly those from the Internet. You may not simply use everything.

2) The supplying a press-ready pdf

When you design and layout the cover yourself, you can do it the best in the layout program InDesign or in combination with other software, but also Illustrator, Photoshop or CorelDraw are used. See Note 3.
Do you want to supply a press-ready cover (and invitations), please abide the following conditions below. If this is not the case, we will have to do adjustments, in order not to mention the extra communication, which increase unfortunately more costs.
  • Resolution: if you use images in your design, based on pixels, you have to take in account a minimum resolution. Something that looks good on screen, in print can completely different and looks unsharp. We keep a minimum resolution of 250 dpi, but preferably 300 dpi. More is also not necessary, this will only bring large files.
  • Color Mode: CMYK (also used images) If still pictures are in RGB, we will convert a color difference, but it can always occur. Only use Pantone or spot colors (spot colors) as expressly agreed with us.
  • Maximum ink coverage / use of black: Always use text for C = 0 M = 0 Y = 0 K = 100%
For solid areas you can also use this but you can also opt for an example of the following shades:
    - Rich black: C=63 M=52 Y=51 K=100%
    - Cool black: C=60 M=0 Y=0 K=100%
    - Warm black: C=60 M=0 Y=30 K=100%
    - Designer black: C=70 M=50 Y=30 K=100%
In our studio you can find examples of these black shades to show you.

    NEVER use C = 100 M = 100 Y = 100 K = 100%, this provides a combined ink coverage of 400% on, which really is too much. Please pay with a maximum ink coverage of 310%
  • End / bleed: Always use an expiration of 3 (or 5) millimeters. See specifications below for each program.

Tip: Make a designer friend your design? Then ask him to pay attention to these things to check, you don't just have to assume that he/she knows. Yet, remarkably many designers are not used to specifically design for print! Cheaper can turn out into expensive ...

Think carefully about an attractive cover.

Indesign

  • Get your files on the right broadsheet format of the book cover. In a book of 165 x 240 mm and a back of 8 mm, this means: 165 8 165 -= 338 mm wide and 240 mm high.
  • Use 3 to 5 mm bleed all around. In the example, the delivered this format: 338 + (2 x 3 mm) = 344 mm wide and 240 + (2 x 3 mm) = 246 mm.
  • Return the cover as one file (back-spine-front).
  • Do not use hairlines, they can drop off in pressure. Linethickness minimum is about 0.1 point.
  • If the inside of your cover should be printed, keep the design of the inside back + 1 mm on both sides blank. The adhesive holds better on plain paper.
  • Ensure that files in full-color printed, contains no spot colors. Put this in Indesign to the desired CMYK values.
  • Save your design as Indesign File.
  • Convert your design to PDF.
  • Provide both files, the PDF and the Indesign file. (Create from the InDesign file first a package (File> Package) so that all fonts and images are embedded)

Photoshop

Creating a cover in Photoshop format is less common, but not impossible.
  • Try to use Photoshop version 6.0 or higher. This versions creates editable text in ie: the textual data, such as title and author's name. This makes textual changes possible afterwards. Something that isn't possible in previous versions.
  • Create your files on the right broadsheet format of the book cover plus 3-5 mm overlap on each side.  In a book of 165 x 240 mm and a back of 8 mm, this means: 3 + 165 + 8 + 165 + 3 -= 344 mm wide and 3 + 240 + 3 = 246 mm.
  • The minimum resolution is 250 dpi. Width of the design: 3 + 165 + 8 + 165 + 3 mm = 344 mm => 13.54 inches x 250 pixels => 3385 pixels Height of the clip: 3 + 240 + 3 = 246 mm => 9.68 inches x 250 pixels => 2420 pixels.
  • The Photoshop file of front and back together is 3385 x 2420 pixels. Note that this is an extremely large files. Your PC should receive adequate memory and computing power have to cope with this.
  • Do not use "artificial" bold or italics in the Character tab. Use the bold or italic version of the font.
  • Use the appropriate color system. So no RGB colors, but CMYK or Duotone!
  • Convert RGB to CMYK. Edit -> Convert to Profile ... -> Choose the profile: Europe ISO Coated FOGRA27. Your RGB image is converted to CMYK.
  • Save your design as JPG, TIF or similar.
  • Save your design as a Photoshop document, ie as PSD file (including the various layers) and put your design below to PDF and send both files.

TIP 1 Besides supplying a pdf always also supply the original files.

TIP 2 . You can also choose to design the cover to outsource our designers. Depending on your needs and supplied files, we can advance an extimate of additional costs. For example, if you have a photo that you want to look back on your cover, try to visualize your ideas in PowerPoint and send it to us along with the original files. We can then quickly make a proposal for you.

TIP 3 Have you ever thought about a 30 days demo version of the above programs to download? The period of 30 days is usually sufficient for your design into reality.
